The story of Gilgamesh was written on tablets that were discovered in 1845. They were found amongst 25,000 tablets that belonged to the library of the last great king of Assyria who lived from 668-627 B.C. Gilgamesh became a famous myth due to the translation of the Assyrian version of the great flood. The characteristics of this flood seem to be very similar to the flood in the bible. Sin-leqi-unninni is given credit for creating the latest version of this myth. Gilgamesh is said to have been a real king of Uruk between 2700 and 2500 B.C. The flood in Gilgamesh is thought to be the same catastrophic flood that took place in Southern Mesopotamia in 2900 B.C. Gilgamesh is believed to be derived from a matriarchal religion.
