The Story Of Gilmash is about a young king who is a fierce ruler of the strong-walled city of Uruk. Gilgamesh was an arrogant ruler who did not understand humility. His father, Lugalband, was heroic and before Gilgamesh, was also King of Uruk. Gilgamesh's mother was the goddess Ninsun. Ninsun was a priestess of the the god Shamash. The gods and the people of Uruk all felt that Gilgamesh was a cruel leader to his people. Although Gilgamesh was physically beautiful, strong, and wise he did not respect his people. Therefore the gods decided to teach Gilgamesh a lesson. They decided to create a man named Enkidu. Enkidu was born a full sized man. He was equal to Gilgamesh in every way. Strong, wise, and brave Enkidu lived among the wild animals. It was till Enkidu was spotted by a farmer and priestess did he learn of the arrogant King of Uruk, Gilgamesh. Enkidu decided to travel to the city of Uruk to meet arrogant Gilgamesh. When Enkidu arrived in Uruk, Gilgamesh was already aware of the arrival due to a dream he had a few nights before. When the two strangers met they fought fiercely. Finally realizing that each other had met their match, they became the best of friends. Enkidu accompanied Gilgamesh on many adventures including killing the evil giant Humbaba, of the Cedar Forest. But the duo became doomed when they insulted Ishtar, goddess of love and fertility. Because of Gilgamesh's refusal to marry her, Ishtar sent the Bull of Heaven down into Uruk. Gilgamesh and Enkidu killed the beast but Enkidu turns ill and dies. Gilgamesh becomes frightened by his friend's death. Realizing that he is a mortal man and he too will die, Gilgamesh sets off to consult Utanapishtim on how to become immortal. Gilgamesh travels a long time to reach Untanapishtim. He even walks through a long dark tunnel which extends for 36 miles. When Gilgamesh finally makes it to Untanapishtim, he is told that he cannot become immortal. Gilgamesh is sad, but he returns home knowing he is a great warrior who has built a strong walled city.
